Ed, I am happy for your success. You have given me so many tips and bits of advise along the way, it was a pleasure to turn the table.
This is the result of my first try. I put this thing through some testing and it did very well. I was a bit worried that the softer stainless would scuff but it held up well too. Even chopping a 2x4, the stainless did not suffer much more scuffing than the 1095. Brian |

Thats super Brian! Mine is far away from being that done (and good looking). It has sparked lots of ideas....I've been thinking of a Mosaic core, multi-layer stainless overlays, and all kinds of other stuff. One of the things that I found strange was when I annealed the billets I made. I treated the annealing portion just as I would have done with straight 1084, and could not cut the guard shoulders, even with a new file. I then put it in my heat treat oven, set at 1420, held for 3mins, then let it slow cool overnight in the oven. Although it was still a bit tough, I could file the shoulders.
When Craig was here, we made a guard for the first one out of NS, and I took your advice about making the guard fit loosely (at least compared to what I normally do). We took it to within less than a 1/2" of fitting up, and it dented up the tang pretty good when we tapped it on. I'm thinking that taking the time to fit the guard in such a way that its just a hair from fitting, and then taking the JB weld to it might be the way to go for this type blade, All kinds of things to deal/think about when your in this territory. __________________ WWW.CAFFREYKNIVES.NET Caffreyknives@gmail.com "Every CHOICE has a CONSEQUENCE, and all your CONSEQUENCES are a result of your CHOICES." |

I look forward to seeing the results on this finished knife Ed. I have been very intrigued by this style since I first saw Burt Foster's work with this type of blade. Keep us posted.

Thanks Ed.
This process came along at a good time. It is good to have new and exciting things like this to help take your mind off other things. Take care Brian |
