pressure fitting a guard

When trying to pressure fit a guard what is the best gap difference? In other words if my blade has a tang thickness of .157" , what size should my slot be?
Thanks
Steve

I'm sure this will cause some debate but, what I do is............. I use a filing jig to square the shoulders on the riccasso, at the same time I file a shoulder on the "flats" of the riccasso about 4 -8 thousands on each side. I then taper my tang to the area that is 4-8 thousands smaller. That way my filing can be a little "oversized" and slide on. The guard then butts up against the riccasso. It provides a nice clean fit with no gaps. Then I use JB weld to fixate the guard to the blade, it also make a watertight seal.

Just what I do,
BB

You most likely could "heat" the guard and "cool" the blade and use a "interferance" fit of + or - a thousands or two .

Steve if I had a tang that measured .157 I would want my gap to measure .155 to .156. I drive it on the last 1/4" or so. I backcut my guard slots so I only have about .100 thickness left that actually fits the tang tightly. I use JB Quick to seal the guard, and then I backfill with Accraglas.
Works for me - but I am an advocate of "if it works for you in your shop that is the right way to do it."

I've always wanted to try the shrink fitting, but never got around to it. As I understand it, this is done even on some very large pieces that are put under tremendous strain, yet the joint holds as if they are one.

My goodness Beebee. You finally coming around? Nice to see you've opened your mind to other techniques.

Steve, I've always just gone back and forth with files until the fit is tight enough and then sealed with JB. Another trick I've done is to mark the tang with either a Sharpie or layout blue when test fitting the guard. The color will wear in the areas you need to remove.

Chris, I can't solder everything !!! Besides if a "slacker" like you can get away with it why can't I. Good to here from you Chris, still waiting for a package.

I use basically the same method as Bill does, but I also file a taper into that last .100 or the guard slot. The tang is tapered, with the thickest part being about 1/2 up the ricasso, and likewise tapered top and bottom with the widest portion being at the "shoulders". I file and fit until the guard is about 1/2" or so from it's desired fit up.....then I drive the guard on the rest of the way. It will have to be removed because there will be tiny "puckers" where the guard material has deformed, but if the shoulders are square, the fit will be near flawless. DON'T try this method with 300 series stainless or titanium guard material!!! Just trust me here....it won't work with those materials. (don't even ask me how I know that! )
