15N20 or ?
Hi
I came across a supply of steel that I think might be 15N20. I talked to the manufacturer of this product and he said it was bandsaw steel. He could not tell me any more about the steel other than it was US made. Does anyone have any info on what the standard band saw steel in the US is? Also I feel it wise to have the steel checked to be sure, but where can I have this done and about how much does this process run? Thanks for any information Brian |

Hi Brian!
It may very well be 15N2, which is chemically identical to 15N20, with the exception of a varing nickel content. The only outfit that I know of making 15N20 is Uddeholm...... at least they are the only ones making steel called 15N20 that they are willing to send a spec sheet with. I think you'll have almost identical results using the "bandsaw" steel in your damascus. I have a private source who tests for me, but has made me promise not to reveal who they are. You might try a college...usually their science dept. will have students do the testing so a minor fee. (Everytime I have something spectrographed it's $60) __________________ WWW.CAFFREYKNIVES.NET Caffreyknives@gmail.com "Every CHOICE has a CONSEQUENCE, and all your CONSEQUENCES are a result of your CHOICES." Sorry for not seeing this earlier. But industrial bandsaw blade can also be L6 or M2 series steel. M2 seems to be the most prevelent at the places I have found out here on the left cost. And M2 is a PITA to get to move under the hammer. Now L6 is great stuff and so is 15N20. So you roll the dice and take your chances. Running a spark test might help a little in finding some of the trace elements in the steel. But other then that, good luck!
