1095

I got a batch of 1080 from Admiral due to their being out of 1084. It works and heat treats very nicely. I'll stay with the 1080.

Thanks Fred I will give that a try when I get toward the end of this 30 feet of 1095. I need to try new stuff. Been stuck in a rut lately just using the same ole' same ole'. Does the hammon show as well as with the 1084?? Thanks

The hammond on the 1080 may be a little weaker but I haven't really been looking for it so I can't say for sure. The hammond on the little necker below didn't show up until I bead blasted it. Again I wasn't looking for it and when I bead blasted the knife and the hammond appeared I was surprised.

I find that the temper line or hamon is a tricky business and getting one to show up nicely even on plain ole carbon steels like 1095 / 1084 etc. is not as easy as what some infer.

I've found that all sorts of tricks and "magic" has to be done to get it to show. It IS all in the HT and the technique. I find that 1095 / 1084 / 1075 are all very similar, never used 1050 but a number of the guys who use it to get a hamon on their Japanese inspired blades seem to do well with that steel too.

This was on 1095 forged from a file.



I'm suggesting that as steels the 10-xx series should show crisp hamon if the right techniques are used. Locally, Steve Filicietti makes Bowies that look like the hamon was cut or scribed into the blade - it is that crisp.
