"Hammer" has arrived!!!

To begin with knife topic, I did use two different custom knives to clean them with.......now that the obligation of knife content is fulfilled...........Hammer has arrived! The light came on this afternoon on only his second duck hunt. The little guy was acting like an old pro from the time the first duck hit the water! Once we finished at sunset, he even found one that we thought we had lost. He came trotting up to me with the bird in his mouth as if to say, "Hey! You forgot one dummy!"
I'm not sure if it's legal for a man to be this proud of a dog......but he certainly earned it today. Dad and I shot 9 ducks, and Hammer was right on top of every one of them, sitting at my side and waiting for me to send him. Then without a word he'd bring them right to me and heel, then wait for me to take the bird. I guess this past year of hard work and training has paid off! He's rock steady on the shot, and won't budge until sent. Gosh I love this "little" guy!

Cool Ed,
Sounds like he did a great job!! Looks like you and your dad did a pretty good job also.

Jon,

So far I like the Nova.........it seems to have a longer stroke on the pump than the Remington does, but it's nice to have something dependable, that locks up when you jack a shell into the chamber. There were a coupleof times yesterday when the ducks were flying so thick that I didn't realize I had shot three times, and I tried to shoot more. Of course I was looking at the gun thinking "what's wrong now!" Guess you have to keep shells in it, for it to fire! Dad and I are going out again in the morning....let's hope it's as good as yesterday. Poor old Maggie (the old Lab) went with us too.....today she's so stove up that she can hardly get around. Guess now that Hammer has figured it out, she can be a home/shop dog for the rest of her days. Although yesterday she was more excited than I've seen her in a long time when she got loaded into the truck.

Shane,
I bought a Bennelli Nova this year, after my 870 started having problems chambering and locking.........I'll bet your going to love that Browing! I bit the bullet and purchased a box of the Remington Hevi-shot before duck season.... Fantastic stuff! Every shot I've taken with it has literally doubled up the ducks.....only probelm is that darn stuff is so spendy. $18 a box of 10. I drew a swan permit, so I figure I'll buy one more box of Hevi-shot when Swan season opens on the 16th.

Ed, it sounds like Hammer has found his niche in life:-) He's sure to tick ya off now and then, nature of the beast, but it makes ya feel good when they "round" the corner.
Have ya had him on the ground with any upland birds yet? bruce
