Brown Mallee Burl Handle material
You guys have got to see this stuff! I have always been a fan of the super curly golden woods, but I have a new favorite now.
Brown Mallee Burl. The only scales I have seen online are non-stabilized. If you have worked with this wood before, what kind of finish do you recommend? I bought a pair of scales to go on a kit. Here is a larger piece from the link below: http://www.xmission.com/~burlturn Cheers! Mike |

Mike,
I'm a fan of super glue finish on burl like this, it fills well and polishes out to a nice luster with relative ease. I've never had a piece of this Mallee in my hand but it looks pretty dense, It would certainly help if it were stabilized. I know there are some stabilizing finishes available from some of the pen turning sites, and there is also some advice elsewhere on this site I beleive about how to build your own stabilizing vacuum chamber. I built one several years ago out of a mason jar and have used it several times with a mixture I bought from one of the pen turning sites. The can doesn't even have a label on it any more, but if I think of it I'll let you know. Dave __________________ Battlement Bladeworks |

minwax
I did the minwax wood hardener on mine, then used walnut oil, then cleaned with rubbing alcohol and put on superglue finish. I love it Daniel Very dense stuff.

Did you use the vaccuum chamber?
Or just let the wood hardener soak for a few days?
I am going to do a combination which I think will work. I plan to boil some water in a pot, remove the pot (with hot water) to a 'spill safe' location; not stove top. I will then place the mason jar, with 1/2 to 2/3 full minwax and scales placed inside inside, into the hot water with cap loose. I will let the jar and contents heat up for a while, then twist the cap closed. Let it sit overnight, then release the vaccum and repeat a few nights in a row. That should do it. It does not take a great deal of temperature difference to create a good vaccum, provided there is enough air to expand/contract. Remember the hard-boiled egg in the coke bottle trick? Thats the plan, I will let you know when it is complete. Thanks, Mike |
