Micarta question

Hi everybody,
I'm Shawn and I make pens and other things.

A friend of mine is becoming quite the blacksmith and wants to make a knife. He's made a few of those wrought iron roses and things like that and it's pretty cool stuff. I offered to make micarta scales for him and he got pretty excited about that. I've made a few blocks of micarta before and made fountain pens from them - so making it isn't the issue.
I've got a block of the stuff, but I made it too thin. He wants a pretty beefy handle or maybe he wants the grain to run one way or the other. Not sure actually. He just said thick so I'm going for 3/4 inch.
My block is only 1/2 inch thick after compressing it.
Is it possible for me to rough up the surface and add more layers or do I need to start all the way over and use this thinner block for something else?

Here it is on the right.

The stuff on the left is denim - but it's for one of my pens - and it turned out to be thick enough. The stuff he wants is black fabric with alternating sheets of green. It's just too thin though. I should have doubled up my fabric but I hadn't worked with this stuff before... Ugh...

I'm afraid I'll have to start completely over...

Thanks!

Sounds like he plans to make a full tang knife. That means the scales will be bolted or pinned to the tang. That, in turn, means that if you added to the thickness of what you already have it would probably work out all right for him, especially if he mounted the scales so that the seam was inside (closest to the tang). Starting over would be best but that should work OK ....

Thanks! I did add on to the block. I used my angle grinder with a metal grinding wheel on it to rough up what was there and cured, and just used a LOT of resin before adding more fabric. It made for a helluva solid block of laminate.
