Did you know this?

Our new Knife Network search engine (the one that replaced knifeseek) automatically searches out and reindexes each knife related web site in our member pool every 5 days. If you go to the search engine, or if you're clicking on a profile and search a name from there, we can deliver content within 5 days currency across more than 500 current web sites in the knife industry. Look up some knife term, then go to Google ... put it to the test.

A lot of the web sites in this pool already have the search engine applet from the old knifeseek.com site that allows their visitors to search this index. We built the new programming in a way that we are able to continue providing these visitors and sites with search ability. For those of you who used the original code, you've likely seen the graphic change to KnifeNetwork over the last couple of days as we've been tidying up.

A sample of how the KnifeSeek graphic changed, but program remained functional is at this link: http://cowlesknives.com/DC_Mainframe.htm

If you notice your graphic has not changed, have modified the code or would just like a copy to paste on your site for visitors, please download or open the attachment and paste on your site.

When I first checked mine, I still saw the old image. When I looked at Don's site, I still saw the old image. When I changed mine to the new code, I still saw the old image.

I thought I was losing my mind for a moment there.

Then I figured it out. In all these cases I was apparently viewing a cached copy of my site's homepage as well as Don's site. A forced refresh in IE did the trick.

If you are using Internet Explorer, and follow Alex's directions, but still see the old KnifeSeek image when you view your site, press Ctrl-F5. This forces IE to refresh/reload ALL the parts of the page being viewed.

#######

For those a little apprehensive about editing their HTML, Alex has made the update quite easy, assuming that you used the original code in its entirety. The code is between two "comment" tags.

e.g. (from the original code)
<!--Begin knifeseek code -->
The actual code is here.
<!--End knifeseek code -->

(from the new code)
<!--Begin Knife Network Search Engine Code -->
The actual code is here.
<!--End Knife Network code -->

Those comment tags serve as "bookmarks" to help you quickly find the code in your HTML file.
  • Highlight and copy the NEW KnifeNetwork code Alex has supplied.
  • Scroll down through your HTML until you find the "Begin knifeseek code" comment.
  • Highlight the everything from the "Begin knifeseek code" comment to the "End knifeseek code", then paste and save.

That's it.

Alex - I cant access the text file you have attached above. I get the following message in a new browser window:

"drbowers, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
2. If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation."

Also, is there a new simple banner available to link to?

Cheers,
Darren

David,
Here's the code. You can copy and paste this.

Code:
<!--Begin Knife Network Search Engine Code -->

<form action="http://www.knifeseek.com/cgi-bin/search/search.pl" method="get" target="_blank">
<br><div align=center><table width="150" border="1" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"><tr bgcolor="#FFFFFF">
<td><div align="center"><font face=Arial size=1><b><a target=_blank href="http://www.knifeseek.com/">
<img height=43 alt="Visit ... KnifeSeek.com"  src="http://www.knifeseek.com/graphics/KS_appletlogo4.gif" width=140 border=0></a>
</b></font></div></td></tr><tr bgcolor="#333399"><td><div align="right"><font face=Arial><font size=1>
<input size=9 name=Terms><input type=submit value=Find name=submit></font></font></div></td></tr>
<tr bgcolor="#CCCCCC"><td><div align="center"><font face=Arial color=#ffffff size=1><font color=#000000>
Knife Industry Search Engine</font></font></div></td></tr></table></div><br></form><br>

<!--End Knife Network code -->

Terry, I should have done that to begin with. Thank you.

No .. no banner links yet. Actually, the search code is better for the visitor who is leaving the site. One search and they are making a query to over 500 web sites worth of content information. This is current to within 5 days. Since your site is in the index, you're better off with the search, because your site may contain what they want, but were unable to find via your navigation. Why loose a visitor to an offsite only link?

Alex

Thanks Terry & Alex - I will drop this on the site when i get a chance.

Interestingly, using KnifeSeek, if I search on Brodziak and anything I always get our Copyright and Privacy page coming first. weird....

It's not as weird as you'd think. Different search engines use different methods to prioritize or set an "order of precedence".

Some use the number of times the search string appears in document, some give precedence to the string appearing in the Meta Tag section of your code, etc. I did a little quick checking here.

In your example, the string "Brodziak" appears 11 times in the code of your Copyright page. That includes the Title section, Meta Tags section, text in the body of the page, javascript rollovers for links, etc.

By contrast, on your homepage the string "Brodziak" appears 8 times in the code.

################

Hee-hee, some of the webmasters reading this have their wheels turning now -- yes, I can hear them. You're thinking that you can load down your code with your desired keyword and boost your position in the search engines.

Resist the temptation! There have been numerous tricks used in the past like putting your desired keywords throughout the code between comment tags. Some enterprising individuals even did tricks like setting the font color to the same color as the background and splattering their keywords all over the page. Since the font color and background color were the same, the text would be invisible to the viewer, but not to search engines.

However, it did not take long for the search bots to wise up to these tricks. Most now realize that they are being "spammed" with tricks like this in order to boost positions and will actually penalize you and move you down the list.
