Wire inlay in soapstone?
Hi. Is it possible to make wire inlay in soapstone?

yes, but its not easy. you need to be careful not to chip out the top edges of the inlay channel. burnish the wire into place rather than hammering. if you need to hammer a spot, take your time and tone try to move too much too fast.
id use fine silver, or gold. when cutting the lines (ive done this with mother of pearl) cut a slight under cut angle. no need to get too acute it doesnt take much to hold it in place. practice on a few scraps with some copper. if you can do that, then gold will be even easier. So you wont use any adhesived its only fastened mechanical? I can't imagine the wire sticking if you can't get a prober undercut angle? Do you ahve a trick for achiving this, or is it "only" practice? I have never done wire inlay in anything yet, so i think i will start in wood, and mayby try stone later. |
