Chisel versus graver
I can't afford a power graver yet so I use vintage sets of gravers(sharpened). This works OK but I was using an oblong chisel yesterday and I found that the extra length gave me a sense of better control and less fatigue.
I have a project on 416 stainless (knife bolster) and would like to get a few more chisels to try on this. 1 Have others here found chisels easier on the hands? 2 I can't find a source for chisels...help? I prefer not to make my own, I'm too busy with other projects. Thanks for any guidance. |

You need a simple square graver mounted in a grip so that you can work it with a chasing hammer. A square graver does 90% of engraving work, and can even do more if needed. The only thing in the photo not done with a square graver is the nick and dot border lines. All the rest with the SG. The nick was done with a flat hand graver, and the dots with a square. I work only with the hammer and chisle method, with a little touch up work with a push graver. Also shown is 90% of my main working tools.

I like your nice simple handle for the chisel. Is your square graver 1/8" or 1/16"? HSS ?
Your work is wonderful! Thanks, Dean |

Square graver is 3/32". Flat graver is 1/8" made from a piece of file steel. Hammer is a modified cheapo tack hammer weighing 3 1/2 oz total weight. 3/32" square graver is from a cobalt steel blank.

Dean,When using H&C I stand at a pedestal and walk around cutting a scroll in one pass,no wasted motion.Point A to point B with out stopping, also find stand over the work the back bone of the scrolls come out alot better even with power. As for gravers,Lindsay M42 blanks grind to 90 with 50 degree face 17&1/2 degree heel with Ngravers Belgian steel handles, better control & less fitigue and it will save your back.Hope this is some help to you.J.J.Roberts
