g10 scales

hello;
Want to put G10 scales on a fillet knife and don't know the procedure in doing so. Is there a tutorial any where? I don't know if I can peen lightly or just epoxy or what. Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks

I don't see why you couldn't peen lightly but you would have to be careful not to mar the material or you will have to do a lot of sanding to take away the hammer marks. However, if you want the pins to mechanically hold the scales to the tang I would look into cutlers rivets, especially for thinner material. You could do something like Corby or acorn bolts for thicker scales. I would also use a water proof epoxy like a marine epoxy or Acraglas bedding compound.

One other thing, if you have to cut the material with a saw blade make sure it's bimetal. I cut some on my band saw with a regular wood blade and the G10 tore the teeth to pieces.

Treat G-10 the same as you would Micarta as far as peening, bolting, and gluing are concerned. As Doug said, G-10 is very hard on cutting tools so be sure to use sharp drills, saws, and fresh belts when working G-10. Finally, G-10 is fiberglass which means a top quality respirator is a must have item ...

The Norax belt would be OK for the finishing work and the Blaze is fine for the rough work as long as they are fresh. Any belt that is fresh should be fine as long as you use it for it's intended purpose. In other words, don't try to use a finishing belt to remove large amounts of material ....

Note that Ray said a respirator, not a dust mask.

I recently finished a pair of matching skinners (in my pictures) with blk / orange G10 .........I prepped drilled and peened as I do with stabilized wood , sanded polished and finished as normal. Note the g10 orange picks up any dark material left over in your buffing wheel , I would suggest having your buffing wheel very clean or better yet new. Good Luck, share your pics when finished ............2 good points above , respirator and water proof for fillets
