Lock back spring question
Is there a lock back spring material any of you guys use such as old bandsaw blades or electricians fishing wire tape that can be used?

I suppose that could be done but I've never heard of anyone doing it. There are plenty of knife supply places that sell various spring materials....

Ive used a saw blade as a spring in a lock back and it was extremely difficult to make it bend evenly. It lost tension after a while because it developed a hinge. Just buying some material seems like it would be the way to go, especially since its is around a buck for six inches. It might work if you could get the spring bend perfectly but seems like a lot more work.

What AAK is describing is metal fatigue. You can pretty well expect that any time you flex a piece of metal beyond the limits of the combination of its innate flexibility and its heat treatment. Since you have no real way to gauge these things on a piece of mystery metal you just have to try it and hope for the best if you really want to use it. In most cases, what you get will not be 'the best'. Do you really want to put all that work into making a lockback folder and then have it fail? I'm guessing you will say you wouldn't like that so either learn to make your springs or buy some appropriate spring stock ....
