Talking Best $200 You ever spent when getting started.

Was kinda of curious what everyones opinion is on must haves when just getting started or even beyond that. I got my tax return back and lucked out in that the wife is gonna let me spend a couple hundred bucks on knife supplies. And was kinda urous as to any reccomendations you guys might have other then steel and scales as i have enough of those to do at least a few knives right now. Any opinions, input, ideas,or things to stay away from would be great. Thanks.

I don't think I've spent $200 yet but this vise is probably the best $20 I've ever spent: http://www.knifemaking.com/product-p/js355.htm
Excellent for detail filework and other light duty applications.

BAND-AIDS?

assuming you aren't using a belt sander, or have all the belts you need. I would go with the little things that are vital, or give the ability to try new things. Good epoxy, material for spacers/ liners, or some small files for spine filework. If you are wanting an actual piece of equipment, the three machines i use constantly that are both well in that $200 range

Aside from a supply of good quality steel, think about the process you go through when making a knife, then think about the part that takes the most time. When I started out, I drilled the outline of the knife blank out of bar stock, used a cold hammer to cut it out, filed the rest to shape, then filed the bevels. I had a drill press to drill the holes.

For me, having a metal cutting bandsaw, albeit a cheap HF version of a portaband, really made the process go faster for me and made it more satisfying.

IF you're still using files, a Craftsman 2x42 is less than $200. I made 150 knives with mine before I built a NWG.

Thanks guys for all the input huge help leaning towards the craftsman didn't realize they were 150 or less. I can go after some other stuff now and still speed the process up. Files are great for detail but a pain for The main stock removal. Again thank you for all the tips and ideas.

The 2 X 42 Grinder goes on sale fairly regularly.

I'd recommend picking up $50 knife shop by Wayne Goddard. Lots of good ideas

Scan craigslist/garage sales/auctions for good tool deals for drill presses and the like

If you go with the 2x42 Craftsman:

1) The new ones are 2 wheel, and usually 1/2 HP or less. If you look around for used ones, the older ones were 3 wheel and 3/4 or 1 HP. Either way, they are fast.

2) Take a look at Youtube for the 500 dollar knife shop. Those guys have done a bunch of mods to the Craftsman sander to get the most out of it for knifemaking. Note--with some of their mods, you can make use of a used Craftsman with a bad motor.
