what happened????
i was forging a pry bar from a broken crowbar and was done and just took the bar outa the quench when i noticed it wasnt totally straight so back into the forge it went and came out with a nice big crack down the side.......what happened

Are you sure it didn't crack in the quench, and you just didn't notice immediately?
Another possibility that occurs to me is that there might have been a microscopic crack (or more than one) in the steel when you started. Rapid expansion and contraction could have made it more visible. You did say you started with a broken crowbar. Just a couple ideas. |

i dont think the the steel was bad the bar broke at the weld so the bar i was using was good. it might have cracked in the quench but i just saw it after i took it out of the forge.....and i was really happy with the way it turned out too
