I need a respirator! Bad.

Gentlemen,

I have been invited to another knife makers house way up in North Dallas to learn:
'The art of beveling the blade'. Way up off N. Central, Spring Creek exit and east.
He said to 'bring my respirator'.
Now I have been meaning to get me a respirator and I see there are lots of respirators at Walmart,
but you knife making guys... what respirator do you use?
How much money does a good respirator cost?
$5. $50, $500. ?
Against steel dust I really have no idea and USA Knife maker Supply doesn't have one in stock.
I have wrapped an old 'T' shirt around my face and worked with a box fan behind me but that may offend my new friend.
I need me a respirator and I wonder what type he is thinking of?

Help...

Jack...?

Hi Jack,

I think what most of people use is a "half mask" respirator. Around the the $20 and $40 price. Home Depot or Lowes will very likely have something in stock.

In a pinch an decent N95 disposable mask with exhale valve will be better than nothing.

Easy to buy a respirator...hard to buy new lungs.

You probably want to bring something for your eyes as well if you are not already covered by specs.

Good luck!

Dan

What Dan said. It isn't steel dust you need to worry about, its the silicon dust from the belts and the various fumes and dusts that are created by grinding on handle materials.

Get a good half face mask that has two replaceable cartridges on it. The best ones like AOSafety and 3M will have an additional dust filter that clips onto the cartridges. Be aware that these masks come in small, medium, and large so you need to be sure you get one that fits your ugly mug. Obviously, in order for this type of mask to seal effectively to your face you must be clean shaven.

Dan also pointed out that you need to protect your eyes and truer words were never spoken. Ordinary eyeglasses alone really are not adequate. Get a cheap pair of safety glasses or goggles that can be worn over eyeglasses. I usually use a full face shield as I find it more comfortable to wear with glasses than safety glasses. Funny thing, even with that full face shield I sometimes feel little bits of stuff hit me in the face so its really hard to over protect your eyes ...

Ray and Dancom,

Got it, 3m, half face w face shield, two filters w dust filter, correct size!
I always wear goggles w glasses under them when I can stand it but...
I always wondered why people wore those full face shields like Wayne Goddard does,
it is easier to wear glasses under the full face shield!
Wow!

I appreciate it y'all

Jack

Kevster,

"I am north of 636. East of 75. Go north on 75. Exit at Spring Valley."

It's Spring Valley. [I need to remember this stuff!]
