Anvil Brand Legend 120lbs - Any Feedback/experience
Howdy gang,
I'm shopping for a NEW anvil and am interested in the Anvil Brand Legend. It seems to be a JHM which was acquired by Anvil Brand. I like the single horn design. I'm curious if anyone has any experience with this anvil or other JHM anvils.. I'm currently working on an old Peter Wright (approx 156lbs) but it has a bit of a sway back and the edges are pretty well rounded (which bugs the hell out of me). http://www.anvilbrand.com/p-716-anvi...-lb-anvil.aspx Looking forward to your feedback. Thanks, Jerid |

I couldn't get the link to feed but my opinion is that you would be trading down to get that anvil. If price is your main worry, go to Old World Anvils. They advertise a 4" cube of heat treated 4140 as an anvil BUT they will sell longer lengths. Don't quote me, but someone else looked into this and I think he came up with a price of $255 for a one foot length. That should weigh in at about 100lbs, especially if you as them not to round off the corners like they do for the block, and will give you the effect of an anvil twice that weight. Save the Peter Wright for the hardy hole and the horn, if you use them.

Thanks for the reply Doug. Price is not really a concern (within reason).. I just want a super clean faced anvil that is good quality. I've been watching ebay but a lot of what I see is not meeting my desires which is why I started looking at new ones..

If you are looking for a super clean face on your anvil, I would suggest that you get something new. You might find one with minimal use or at least one that could easily be resurfaced but they are going to be a little on the rare side and you might end up competing against collectors who a looking for old pristine anvils.

Quality anvils is getting to be more of a problem for us knifemakers all the time. Your Peter Wright is as good as they come but I understand your frustration. Another option to replacing it would be to find someone in your area who could reface your anvil.

I was thinking of that Gary.. I took a look at the depth of the swayback and figure it's somewhere between 1/8 - 3/16".. I'd hate to alter it but it is definitely an option. One could argue that the spots that are "high" take the lighter hits and the area that is sagging is where the bulk of the heavy hammering occurs which would still be full thickness.. I think I'll keep looking for an old, quality, replacement..

Anvil Brand anvils are cast ductile iron.
