Leaf Spring for Straight azors

I have been wanting to make a straight razor for a while now. but since I have not worked with leaf spring before, I wanted to know if it was a decent metal to use for such a project. is the carbon content high enough to get the edge sharp enough? and should I case harden it, or do I need to since I won't exactly be hitting anything with it?

Razors are a special breed of knife. You need to do a lot of study on razors before you will be able to make one that razor aficionados would really appreciate.
For instance, no razor would ever be case hardened.
A leaf spring would probably work but since you have no way of knowing what steel might be in it, it isn't the best choice. Also, razors are very thin and leaf springs often have lots of stress cracks from their life as springs so that can be a bad combination. Finally, most leaf springs are at least 1/4" thick. It would be much easier to start with some thin bar stock and not have to do all that reduction.
As for the edge, it will be 'razor sharp' if you sharpen it that way no matter what steel it is made of ...

I agree with Ray. Most modern automotive springs are 5160 or similar. While that steel makes a tough knife, with a strait razor you want edge holding. If you were to make identical blades from the spring and 1084 you'd put twice as much work(if not more) into forging the spring and it would at minimum hold an edge 20% less.
