Hunter's Bowie Sheath
This is one Harry finished up today. It is a 5" hunter's bowie with a forged 1084 blade and ash handle from a hammer handle he found at Lowes. The wrap strap sheath is 7-8oz leather with a rawhide liner and hot oil/wax finish.

Kind of like a graveyard isn't it Harry. You know that there are people around but they just aren't talking.

Thanks for the comments Pap! I told Charlie that it was probably you looking at this thing 87 times. Likely wondering why it looked so plain when you know I have some "tools". I just haven't had proper training...........yet. Maybe we can work something out around the time of Trackrock?

I don't get over to this forum nearly often enough. Great job! I like the knife and the sheath as well. Sometimes simple is better, and in this case, it fits! |

You talk about hot oil /wax finish;what type of oil do you use? I've only used dyes and stains. Thanx, Jim

Recurve, I use neat?s-foot oil and bee's wax at about a 50/50 mix, heated in a crock pot. It gives the leather a look that I like and penetrates the leather well. You do need to be careful about getting the mix too hot because it will catch fire, and you don't want to leave the leather in too long because it will cook and get hard if it gets too hot. A hot oil/wax finish doesn't work well with stains because the stains still tend to rub off on hands and clothes. If I am using leather that is stained I use a finish that will seal the stain in like Satin Sheen or some other acrylic coating.
Thanks for the comments guys. I have been putting some miles on this knife and sheath for the last few months and it is starting to get that comfortable look I like. |
