Now I remember -
I remember now why I don't use bone. I bought these scales as a set. They were obviously from two different animals. (I guess they were fed different diets). Same dye, but different colors.
It is forged from 1084, has a tapered tang and dovetailed damascus bolsters. Really ticked me off By the way, this is the same knife, just a shot of the left and right sides to show how the bone is a different color from side to side. Robert |

Robert I've got to agree with Sandy, that knife is stunning. Don't see any problem with different look on either side. Heck, even book matched wood is never totally the same. Just present this as a plus. A buyer could wear this left hand carry for one look and then switch to right hand carry and have a "new" knife!

You can't bookmatch bone. Best you can do is cut both scales from the same side and keep your fingers crossed, or make up a whole bunch pre-dyed and match up best as possible.
I like the knife just fine myself........can I have it for my "rejects" box? If you're using the dye I think you use, it will vary in reaction by the inch in length sometimes and by the "sanded" layer surface wise. Learn to like it Robert, everybody else does! __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |

Hey Pop and Rick. Sure missed you guys down at Statesboro. Great time and great food.
Carl, When I rough profiled the scales, I took a piece and tested some dye on on ONE piece of the scrap. Looked pretty good, so you can imagine my suprise when I put that dye on the finish sanded scales. I keep picking this thing up and looking at it. The "Look" is sort of growing on me. Robert |

Well it ought to. I just can't figure which side I like best, besides you can't see but one side at a time without that trick photography stuff.

As the Case rep once told me (when I ran a cutlery shop and complained about mismatched bone) "Hey, you only look at one side at a time!"
