Gus Grissom
I saw Gus Grissom's Model 17 Astro this week.
It looks pretty good for spending years at the bottom of the sea! __________________ Andy Garrett https://www.facebook.com/GarrettKnives?ref=hl Charter Member - Kansas Custom Knifemaker's Association www.kansasknives.org "Drawing your knife from its sheath and using it in the presence of others should be an event complete with oos, ahhs, and questions." |

The light wasn't conducive to good photography.
Here is a stock photo from the web: __________________ Andy Garrett https://www.facebook.com/GarrettKnives?ref=hl Charter Member - Kansas Custom Knifemaker's Association www.kansasknives.org "Drawing your knife from its sheath and using it in the presence of others should be an event complete with oos, ahhs, and questions." |

I've always found this knife interesting because it was not the knife made by Randall specifically for each of the Astronauts. Those 8 knives had the Randall-made logo. working from memory without references at this time, this knife was one of the 20 that were made by using Solingen blades so altered that the Solingen markings were polished off of the Ricosso. They were subsequently acid etched with the lettering as shown.
According to Gaddis, these knives were provided initially for training in the desert and were forwarded with sheaths possibly Heiser/HKL, whereas the original 8 Randall-made logo stamped knives were forwarded with sheaths possibly made by Stockman. Here is an example from what is likely a knife from the same set of 20. This is Col/Dr. DeSalvo's knife that was given him during his service in the Mercury program and later carried in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. It sold of over $7,000 on E-bay a few years ago.
