Respirator Requirements

Hello,

I've done some searching here and found a lot of posts about having to wear a respirator when working with certain types of handle materials.

Is there a certain type of respirator that should be used? I've noticed that there are different types of filters for the respirators and want to make sure that I get the appropriate protection.

I'll be working with micarta if that helps.

Thanks!

-Pete

Any respirator rated for dust and mists with a NIOSH stamp is adequate if ...I say IF you can get a good fit with it. Beards defeat the cheaper models but a more sturdy rubber base model can be used if the straps are tight enough. If not use an air supplied model.

Micarta puts off phenol and formaldehyde gas, a regular organic vapor cartridge wont protect you completely.
Get dual rated cartridges, organic vapor/formaldehyde.
That stuff can absorb through the skin, so vacuum off as soon as possible after grinding.
It is a good idea to use a respirator while grinding most knife related products. A small price to pay for good long term health.

go to labsafety.com. they have a large selection of dual purpose cartrages. I think they also have an area explaining on proper fit testing.
