Trip Hammer

Got a question that someone with more experience can help me with. I have access to a old trip hammer from a local neighbors farm. It is one that was run on a over head belt drive. It is quite old but in good condition. Can this be modified to run off of a motor? It used to be used in the old black smith shop for straightening out plow shares etc. Be great for my shop if I can get it working. Thank you for any advice you can give me.

If you look at most modern trip hammers (and even some older ones) You'll see that the majority are run with an overhead belt going to an electric motor (usually mounted to the frame in fairly close proximity to the hammer's drive wheel). As long as you have sheaves or a drive wheel to correspond to the belt (or belts) that run the hammer's main drive wheel, you should be good to go.

Just make sure you get a motor that's big enough to run the hammer. For a 25# I'd guess that a 1.5 or 2 hp would be more than enough, but you might want to compare specs with other trip hammers.
