Slow Speed Grinder
I recently had the opportunity to observe the Jet slow speed grinder in operation. It impressed me, but I have decided that I can make one for much less money. I already have a Bodine gear reduction motor, as well as shaft stock and bearings to get started. It's my intention to fabricate a slow speed wet grinder grinder (gear motor is 88 RPM) using both a stone and a 7 inch abrasive AL/Ox disc mounted onto the same shaft. This set-up would be used for the final sharpening on my knives. I've also considered incorporating a leather strop wheel into the design.
I'm wondering if anyone out there has built such a device before and am looking for input and advice before I get into the project and realize there was a better idea. All input and suggestions are appreciated. |

I've been hearing good comments on the other forums about the cardboard wheel systems that mount on a simple arbor, like this one from Tracy:
