Just wondering

We all have our favorite knife designs. We tend to make those knives that look good, perform well. and just plain feel good in the hand, but....if it comes right down to it...which of those attributes is most important....and which would you "give away" first. Of course, we'd all like every knife we make to be fully functional, attractive, well balanced, etc. ,but the simple truth is that all designs don't lend themselves to this ending.
My personal priorities are (1) it has to be functional (2) it should hold up well even under adverse conditions, (3) it should be attractive, (4) it should feel good in the hand, (5), (6), (7)...
Just looking for ideas as to how others prioritise their designs.

Honestly, I can't think of any other way to look at it beyond what you've already said. The only other type of knives are collector's knives which are only for display. Those knives can be done any way your imagination may take you. For using knives though, what you said pretty much is the way it must be and I personally wouldn't want to 'give up' any of those characteristics.....

Im in the same mode of thinking. Form follows function. I want every knife I make to go to hell and back and then go on a reunion tour. Function is first and foremost in my mind. The form just happens as it progresses. Nothing is planned, and if it is, it never is set in stone.

Once I get one cut out, I make sure it handles well, is safe in the hand and is balanced to an extent.

From there on out its usually whatever strikes me at the time.
