Saving a JPG with layers Photoshop 7

Can anyone here help with saving a jpg image with layers so that when I open it up again I can work in the idividual layers? Currently I only get the background layer and it is locked, is this normal?

Johnny - you need to save an Adobe PS "layer" file in the native Photoshop PSD/PDD format in order to go back to work on it more and then when you're all done save it as a JPG. You'll wind up with two files this way - I save my PSD's in an "In the Works" folder and my JPG's in my website's folders.

Exactly. The .PSD files will retain the individual layers, but a JPG flattens them. I think I heard that the PSD file is also a TIFF file in essence as well, without degrading compression algorythms.

The PSD file is about 5-10 time the file size of the JPG, so be forewarned. I either save these onto a CD or delete them after I am certain the client and I have been satisfied. In many cases I am left with only two files: a LARGE JPG and a web-sized one. All the original draft photos and PSD's are eliminated.

More info than you really wanted....
