Hidden Tang on Damascus Blank.
Ed, when you sell Damascus billets do you attach a tang of 1084 etc or different material for a hidden tang knife. Or do most utilize the material for folders and full tang knives. What type of steel do you use for the handle and do you forge weld or arc weld the material in place? Have you tried arc welding a handle on? Thanks

I don't weld tangs of other material onto damascus blanks/billets. (prefer to have it all one piece) I personally feel that the only proper way to attach a tang is to TIG weld it, (I don't own one of those) and then it requires that the blank/billet be well annealed, and left in that state. (if you have two dissimilar materials, and you weld them together with filler, it will always be a weak spot, and could tear itself apart during the heat treat)
If someone requested that particular thing, I generally refuse to do it, and offer to draw out a hidden tang as an alternative. I will usually charge a bit of labor for drawing out a hidden type tang, plus whatever the origonal cost of however many inches of the chosen size stock it takes to make the tang (usually for a 4-5" hidden tang it only takes 2-2.5" of the stock) Most of the damascus stock that I sell tends to be in full billet/bar form. __________________ WWW.CAFFREYKNIVES.NET Caffreyknives@gmail.com "Every CHOICE has a CONSEQUENCE, and all your CONSEQUENCES are a result of your CHOICES." When you draw a tang for such a knife. Do you round the very end and thread it for a pommel using a threading die? Or do you prefer a different method of attachment? Thanks

I generally just forge a "stick/hidden" type tang, leaving it large enough for the individual to grind down and thread to their liking. When I'm doing it for myself, I generally use either a 4-40 thread or a 6-32 at the max. (that is IF the knife is suited to doing so). Most of the time for hidden tang hunters and other knives where a buttcap isn't desired/called for, I radius the end of the tang and glue it into the handle material.
