Finally made a Spike Knife

12 years into my knifemaking journey, I finally got around to hammering out a spike knife.
The spike was picked up along the tracks while hunting. I assume its 1050ish.
I had no plan. I just started hammering. I figured the steel would tell me what it wanted to do. Interestingly, the clip point was natural--part of the beveled spike tip.
I triple normalized.
Edge quenched / passed the file test
I drilled and spent hours filing out steel in the handle on the X axis and the Y axis. The balance point is not perfect, but it far better than most spike knives, and much lighter than it looks.

Cool. Looks good. Most spike knives look like an afterthought or...I don't know, crude and amateurish. Yours looks like it was designed, planned and executed. Looks great!

For the record, spikes at best are .35%. If they are REMA spikes (what's required to be used today) they are .17-.25%/c. You may be aware, but the RR can charge trespass for walking on the rail right of way. They will also press charges for theft for those junk spikes. I'm just mentioning it for those who may not know.

Thanks Goater and JM.
I too was concerned with carbon content. That's why the file test was important to me. You can also see the faint hamon from the edge quench. It did harden, but I wouldn't ever call a spike knife a 'high-performance blade'.

As for the legal stuff..., crossing tracks to public hunting land is fine in this state.
If they wish to hunt me down and prosecute..., they'll never take me alive, see!

Well done , great sellers.....
I usually have a couple on the go waiting between real knife heat treats or other odd jobs.....
Make great mantle pieces for the artsy fartsy type , coat rack , wine racks as well , grab em rail spikes when I can , endless options to bring old spikes back to life !

1040 to 1050 is quite heat treatable. And that is a nice spike knife Mr. Garrett. You have a 1040-50 spike if that is a Hamon I see there. They all were not 1030 or less.

Not a fan of paracord, but the double wrap on the hind of the handle is nice.

Thanks again.
That is an edge quench hamon you see.
I am typically not a paracord fan either, but with the relatively crude north/south and east/west filing I did to reduce the aft weight, it seemed appropriate for this piece.

Sheath is about done.
