CEREMONY by Mark Williams

Mark can claim the blade, handle, canvas covered wood scabbard, goose quill & silver work, lanyard and fittings etc., but his wife, Deborah, did the art on the scabbard.

Mark envisioned an aboriginal or indigenous human ceremonial blade and described the basic use of such a blade thusly; "...lay it on the throat and draw it quickly."

The whole package is very intense, plus it's well made. The blade is long and tapered. It is thinner than a blade on anything else in the 15 inche range and it's true - super straight - really beautiful.

The first two images are from a series I named "Heads I Have Known" followed by three straight-forward detail shots.

There's just something inspiring about an artist interpreting the work of another artist...

You have a gift Buddy!

THAT is the most thought provoking and inspiring work that I have seen in quite some time.

And the photographs are pretty spectacular also.

I would LOVE to have those images in a POSTER, or 3, or 4

Absolutely Breathtaking

Tony

Appreciate the comments and I know Mark does too.

The blade was forged from W-2 roundbar steel. Handle is Giraffe bone with sterling tacks and coin silver spacer. The pommel is antique silver spoon with sterling added to complete it. OAL 20" - blade 15 1/2"

The wood scabbard is covered with canvas and features goose feather quills on one side and a dream-like scene of various native spirits painted by Mark's wife, Deborah, on the other side. The tip and throat are sterling silver, as is the lanyard hardware. The snake and the side pieces are nickel/copper alloy.

I was assuming the blade was some kind of San Mai construction with that high contrast, I guess hamon line then. I was also thinking the hardware was some low count damaskus. Oops!

I don't say much about too many knives anymore, but I've been back to this one time and again today.

My tastes run to art knives, and I find this breathtaking! "Totemic" and "archetypal" are words that come to mind. Gives me the heebiejeebies the way a Lovecraft story does.

High kudos, Mark and Deb! Knife as art; art as knife. Thanks for sharing your great fotography of this one, Buddy. That first foto with the face illusion makes the hair pop on my neck.

Awesome work, all of you.....

This one defies my ability to capture the essence in words. Now knowing it's intent, it's scary and captivating at the same time. Congrats to Mark and Deborah. Whew!

The quill side has me guessing. Is that a window into the back of the scabbard?

Incredibly clear images and layout experiments. I'm not worthy...

Coop

Mark must be the prop master for the new Mel Gibson movie. Nice, if gruesome, package.

"...lay it on the throat and draw it quickly."
Why is it that nobody envisions themself as the sacrifice?

I was trying to doodle some new designs tonight. ...just kept drawing this blade shape--it's hauting me.

There is something very captivating here and I am clearly not the only shmo who feels it.
