Band saw damascus made easy!
Here's a simple way to put together a small Damascus billet. Start with some band saw blades, cut them in 7" sections. You'll also need some metal pallet banding. Set the band saw sections and fold the banding over using a hammer to crimp it together. It holds itself together quite well. You can easily get 15 -19 layer billets to start.
Use borax or your favorite flux and begin the welds. You can expect to be able to fold it twice with no problems. Since the band saw I have doesn't want to weld together and you'll loose some of the low carbon banding a third weld doesn't always take. For that third weld and to add a little high carbon juice to the mix I add a file to the middle. Forge it out, heat treat and a little elbow grease. |

how does it perform? Would make nice bolster/guard stock anyway.

Since the band saw is floating around .7% carbon and the pallet banding is around .25% C it is a high low Damascus. If that's all your working with then it needs to be worked fast. The file in the core adds a high carbon center and performance should be equal to that of a file. Of course forging time will have a big effect.

so it is basically san mai with the file

Yes, but I can't spell san mai... It will harden without the file, I just do it for the extra carbon edge. This stuff forges easer than the usual L-6/1095 billets I work with.
