O1 an15n20
just got some O1 was going to forge with 15n20 but was told the O1 would not turn very dark ..just did some knifes for my sons an used 1080 an15n20 the contrast was great..should I use the 1080 with the O1 to get better contrast..ive never used O1 an have been using 1095 an 15n20 they dont get very dark patterns ..I want to try O1 because I heard it make a sharper blade .....any help would help ...

O1 is the closes to black that I have found 1084 is close and 1080 is close to the 1084 that I have used.
Just be sure to heat treat for the O1, it requires a soak at temp. Here is one I just did in O1 and 8670M, the 8670M shows more gray than 15N20. Last edited by Mike Turner; 12-29-2010 at 11:01 PM. |

O-1 will get plenty dark due to the Mn in it. However, from a heat treatment perspective, it may not be the best match. O-1 also takes a little more care in forging as it will go red short and crumble if worked too hot.
If you want good contrast, easy working characteristics, and a good match for heat treatment, I'd stick with the 1080/1084 (Aldo's 1084 is fantastic with a higher Mn content so it etches darker, and touch of V to help inhibit grain growth). -d |

thanks guy I think I might just make some polished blade from the O1 a stick with the 1080 for damascus have a happy new year.....
