Bird and Trout KITH

This year we'll have two easy KITHs, the first will be for a Bird & Trout knife. If you google that term you can find hundreds of examples on the internet but I have attached two to give you the basic idea. From these two examples you can see that you have a very wide latitude on exactly what you choose to build.

The rules are simple:

1. Any steel that you can personally heat treat or that you can send out to a professional heat treater. If this is your first KITH then contact me by email .

2. Any blade length but most are small, 2" to 4".

3. For this KITH a hollow grind is preferred but NOT required. This is intended to get those who might not otherwise be using hollow grinds to try it - KITHs are for learning and small blades are easiest. The next KITH will be a flat grind.

4. Don't worry about being overly fancy, but do worry about a very high quality fit and finish.

5. Sheath your knife, leather or Kydex.

Entries will be due by July 4th, 2017. Take the best picture you can of your knife and sheath against a plain background. Have the knife laying horizontally (not angled) in the picture and include a ruler to show scale.

Once the entries are all in each of you will rate all of the knives. I will tabulate the results and use that to tell you who to trade with so everybody gets a new knife. Have fun!

Lots of time for the deadline....I shouldn't have a problem finishing. I'm in. A good reason to do my first hollow grind.

Hey guys, I haven't posted for quite some time but I talked to Ray and it looks like I'm going to participate in this one myself. Ray, I'll tell you up front that since a hollow grind isn't required, I'm probably not going to do one. I've done several in the past but my grinder requires a slightly thicker steel to get good results with that style of grind due to the diameter of the wheel on my grinder.

Anyways, Ray or someone else knowledgeable, what makes a good bird and trout knife? Judging from the pictures Ray posted, it's a small. lightweight knife with a short, drop-point blade that's used to clean trout and small game. Are there any other details I'm missing?

Cool

Doesn't have to be a drop point knife Hunter, just a small knife for cleaning Quail, doves or 8" trout. I believe I'm making mine from an old Nicholson file and will put a small false edge and thin upswept spear point for doing small animals like squirrels. I miss quail hunting, I hunted mountain quail in my youth in the mountains of CA. They were very tasty. I especially miss goose hunting which is about the biggest animal you'd clean with a B & T knife. That ought to cover what a Bird and Trout Knife is for. If you have ever cleaned squirrels or doves you get the picture.

Thanks Jim, I think I get the picture. I mostly stick to deer hunting but I enjoy squirrel hunting now and then. I'm thinking I want to use 1095 and put a nice hamon on mine if i get the time. I can't wait to see what everyone decides to do.
