Induction smelting iron

On a second run the iron button did not separate off but stayed attached to the black glass.

Six oz of hematite took eight minutes to go liquid. I held it at liquid for ten minutes until the breaker tripped. It cooled for 20 minutes which if better insulated would cool much slower.

After four minutes the radiant heat was getting high enough to damage the front of the unit. So I had to quickly cut some pieces of insulwool for a heat shield.

The iron refined out good but the hematite I am using has a very low iron content. But I could do a run every 35 minutes and then combine the buttons and get a couple oz to melt together.

Just doing a few batches I found out it can work on a small scale and do it very fast. But unless I can get some ore with a bit higher iron content I would not want to spend much time pursuing smelting with it. A higher powered unit would definitely make things more efficient. I also will need to get more amperage out to my shop since the forge is very power hungry.

You can also melt rocks with it whenever you get that urge to play with lava.

It's very odd stuff to mess with. I melted some glass a few days ago and it's much runnier and molten rock is much thicker.

That has got to be one of the coolest things I have ever seen. Thank you for sharing!

And now I want an induction machine.

If you haven't seen it yet I have a whole thread about the induction forge over on Ed's forum. It is an amazing machine just for forging alone not to mention all the other cool stuff it can do.

Yes it's cool ! I used it to make steel for my thesis in college .That was many years ago -the rest of the metallurgy students thought I was weird !
