Platen question
I noticed that the platen on my grizzly has some duct tape looking stuff on it that's wearing off. Do I need this little bit of padding or can I just pull it off and use the bare metal?

Not an expert but lots of guys are putting a special glass covering on their platen to make it smother. USA Knife Maker sells them, might want to check them out. I plan on doing this as soon as I get my grinder together. Ed

You can use just the bare metal but it won't last long that way. The reason for the glass is that it is very hard, very flat, and near impossible to wear a groove in it. The fiber stuff you have now is supposed to reduce the drag from friction but it doesn't last long.
You could put an extra layer of steel over the platen until you can get glass or just replace the steel as needed. If you do use the glass be sure to do it right - put a metal foot at the base of the platen so that the glass cannot slip off. I had that happen once and learned my lesson, no more glass grenades for me .... |
