Hi ya Jimmontg!
The link you posted to your flicker account seemed to have worked for me, but I didn't see any push dagger among the photos. I would suggest that everyone check their local laws concerning the legality and definition of a "push knife" or "dagger" each state is different. I found this website a few minutes ago and the information on Indiana knife laws are accurate - but I can't say about other states. Be sure to notice the dates when researching. Also Indiana has no laws against a push style knife, a Dagger, or length of a blade. Only throwing stars and ballistic knives. A T-style handle is legal in The Great State of Indiana. http://www.knifeup.com/knife-laws/ To perhaps answer your question to Ray about the hollow grind requirement: the idea is to 'push' the limits of everyone's comfort zone into trying something new. For guys like me who havnt done a hollow grind this is a good reason to join in. I have definitely learned alot while making this knife! It gave me a reason to do my very best without risking a whole lot (a bit of pride and the cost of materials). If everyone works on good faith and does their best while creating their knife to enter- everyone wins and I would think accomplishes the very goal of the KITH here amongst us. I'll post some pictures of my entry soon! __________________ AT "We shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow, And watch where the chalk-white arrows go To the place where the sidewalk ends." Jim,
As Alex surmised the hollow ground requirement is an attempt to get people to try something they may not have tried before. However, if you just can't get it done then do a flat grind. The laws governing these knives vary widely concerning carrying this type of knife but most jurisdictions don't prohibit owning one. For that reason, I would suggest leaving these knives on a shelf with the rest of your collections. Also, I want to apologize to our Canadian friends. When I set this KITH up I didn't realize Canadian laws were so Draconian with respect to push knives and that inadvertently prevented Canadian participation. Be assured that the next KITH will be open to everyone... |

That short stubby knife the link shows can be used as a push dagger. It's handle is shorter than usual so you can palm it with the blade sticking through your fingers. I have made some with smaller handles, but they do not have a tee handle thus not technically against the law. As I explained the guy I sold it to had big hands as I usually shorten the handles up. He could hold it comfortably between his middle fingers with his hand balled in a fist. I should have taken a pic of him doing that. It was just a bit too big for my hands. If it was for me I would have shortened the handle by half an inch or more.

I understand now, looks like nice work to me. If its legal and the customer is happy that's a win!

It's getting about time for the entry pictures to start coming in so here is how the pictures should look:
Lay the knife out horizontally (not diagonally). Include the sheath. Use a plain background - solid color, plain table top or similar background Include a ruler in the picture Email the picture and a brief description (what steel and handle material) to me at knives@rayrogers.com Have fun! |

Any progress reports? I've submitted my entry and I believe Ray has posted it on the website. Hope everyone who is participating has an easy time finishing their knife!
Good Luck! __________________ AT "We shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow, And watch where the chalk-white arrows go To the place where the sidewalk ends." Shel Silverstein |

The end of this KITH is rapidly approaching. Who still plans to enter a knife and who needs some extra time?

No problem. I'd like to hear from others who might need an extension. We'll go ahead and set Thanksgiving as the closing date ...
