Newbie's first knife.

Hi all,

Gunna be giving a go at my first proper knife build from scratch, everything from cutting the blade from a blank, to heat treating, to treating the wood.

What are people recommendations for steels and woods to use on a first-build?

Also, anything I should consider before starting?

Any info will be much appreciated!

First, read the Sticky thread called BEFORE You Heat Treat Your First Blade at the top of this forum.

We usually recommend 1084 for a new maker but being that you are in England you probably don't have access to that steel. What you want then is a simple carbon steel with about .8 % carbon and as little other elements in it as possible. You'll need to look at your local knife supply places (assuming you have them) or your local steel supplier. 'Steel supplier' means a place that sells metals only and mostly steel - you won't find what you need in a hardware store.

Other than that, your question is a basic one asked by every new maker and answered here a thousand times so use the Search to gather as much info as you can. After that, if you have specific questions we will do our best to help ....

As far as wood goes, I would go with a inexpensive hardwood, since your first couple of knives you will want to really put through their paces and make sure they hold up. Function over beauty for sure. Granted diff would finishes can make the handle look good, but no point in spending a lot of money on handle materials yet. Just my 2 cents based on my own experiences and advise that was given to me

First of all there is a British Bladesmithing Society or British Knife Makers Society so it would be a good idea to check in on that board to check out the steel supply situation. I know that some of the makers in the UK still order their steel from the states. The shipping might be an issued but I know that the New Jersey Steel Baron, aka Aldo Bruno, ships to your side of the pond.

As for a wood goes, I can't advise any better than Redstick.

Doug
