new at knife making
Here is one I just finished made from an old steel rasp im not very good and dont have many tools but I just cant stop trying I hope with a lot of practice I can do better....I use a small hand grinder as you can tell and a 1" belt sander and sand by hand.

I'd say that is a pretty good start. You could stand to get more of the scratches out of the scales but other than that, ya done good.
Keep at it, you learn something new with every one you do. Have fun, Carey __________________ Everything you do says something about who and what you are so ALWAYS sign your work with excellence. You are cordially invited to check out my web site: Handmade Knives by Carey Quinn |

I'd say you're off to a decent start. It actually looks like a knife that will cut something!
My first 6 knives were made from worn out Nicholson files, annealed, ground, and heat treated and tempered. Number one for me wasn't as good as yours for sure! Save up for some better equipment, and keep practicing. David __________________ Broadwell Studios LLC Fine Art Knives & Writing Instruments http://www.david.broadwell.com |

I'd say that's pretty darn good for your first knife. Stick around here and you'll be a pro in no time.

What you work with is not a problem it's what you do with what you have.
For a first time knife I think that it looks really good. One note for you to think about and that is spend about 50 to 60% on finishing the knife and you will have not only a looker but a user as well. Never give up. __________________ Curtis Wilson Wilson's Custom Knives, Engraving, and Scrimshaw |

You're not making anyone upset, that's what these forums are for--to help each other learn new techniques. It looks like you are off to a good start, and the more knives you make the better you'll get!

I like the statement you made "I just can't stop trying". Well don't. You will find that the time spent making knives adds to the length of our lives, it does not detract from them. I agree that the tools aren't that important, it is the desire to make a good knife. That being said, the problem most of us "makers" have is going to the next step before we finish the one we are on. Stay with it, ask questions and question the answers.
