It's just a type of mother-of-pearl and works the same way. See a post on this forumentitled, "Mother-of-pearl" for more info on working with it, should you be interested.

The set on this piece is a laminate. It's nice, but quite expensive for its size.

I ask, because my dad has a couple -old- abalone shells, that if I can talk him out of one, might make for some nice material. I'll check out the Mother Of Pearl thread. Thanks.

Thanks. Some guys liked it in NYC at ECCKS last week-end, but one comment was that Abalone is not a good seller. Must not be, since I brought it home with me.
