Iknow this sounds weird, but has....
anybody use a flat piece of leather for a handle on a knife? Not . Also has anybody used 1/4" thick round leather and wrapped it like ? Just wondering. Thanks

Never saw that 1/4" round thing done but lots of knives have (or used to have) flat leather handles. In fact, somebody just posted a new on on the forum here a week or so ago, sorry I can't recall who it was right now but they may see this and chime in ...

Weight lifting belts are normally oil/chem tanned to produce durable "wearability". Most likely the chemicals used will react with the steel and start a corrosion process. If it's been used to any extent it is going to have salt deposits from sweating as well. We all know what that will do to steel. That's why most of us sheath makers only use veg tanned leathers for sheaths and even then most of us seal the inside as well.
Not sure on the diameter of the leather "cordage" used, probably not 1/4". I have seen several european swords with wrapped handles. Most likely with a wood core to fill the handle out a bit. Like to see your finished project so post pics. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |
