Mimosa Utility
Greetings everyone,
Here?s a knife I just finished. It?s stock removal 3/16 inch Starrett O-1 that I heat treated myself. The knife is about 10.5 inches in overall length, 1.75 inches at the widest point, and has a cutting edge about 5.5 inches long. The handle is stabilized Mimosa wood, from a tree that my father had. The whole knife was etched in vinegar before the handle scales were installed. I don?t really know what to call this style, so I?m referring to it as a ?Mimosa Utility? knife at the moment. I hope you all like it. __________________ Christopher Meyer, Shenipsit Forge Last edited by Chris Meyer; 08-30-2008 at 11:48 PM. |

Hello Chris,
Mimosa Utility is just right! I love knives that use materials with a history. Adds something that skill alone can't. Very coo! We have 'um in the south, but I didn't know they grew all the way up in Connecticut. And the knife looks great! Very well done. Fit and finish look great. Love the gold fleck grain in the scales. You didn't mention liners. Do I see some kind of white liners under the scales? Thanks for letting us see it. chiger, |

Yes, I forgot to mention that there are white liners under the scales.
As for the wood, my grandfather had the only Mimosa tree I'd ever seen. He lived in Westerly, RI. One year he gave a sapling from his tree to my father. My father planted the Mimosa tree at his house, also in Westerly, and it grew there for about 30 years. Eventually the tree died, and my father had to cut it down. I couldn't let it go to waste, so I took a few lengths of the trunk home. I had some of it stabilized by WSSI last year. I think the wood turned out well, and I like the history my family has with it. Other than my grandfather's and father's trees, I've never seen another Mimosa tree (except in pictures). __________________ Christopher Meyer, Shenipsit Forge |
