Stitching awls?
Newbie to leather crafting. Making some pouch style knife sheaths using 8-9 oz leather. I bought some stitching irons but have since determined that it will be very difficult to get them through 3 layers of 8-9 oz leather. I'll still use them to mark the leather but I believe I'll need an awl to actually be able to pierce through the 3 layers. Can anyone recommend a sized and manufacture of a diamond bladed stitching awl I could purchase? I'm using approximately 1mm waxed nylon thread from Tandy and John James oo sized needles.
Thanks for your help! Tom |

The best awls are those by Bob Douglas and sold by http://www.sheridanleather.com/searc...show=40&page=1
But they are not cheap.. You can also get good awl blades and handles from any dealer of CS Osborne tools such as Campbell-Randall http://www.campbell-randall.com/shop...y&path=1_36_37 Which style is up to you - no matter what style I always grind a flat on one side so it won't roll when you set it down. As for blades again the Bob Douglas blades are the best, but the Osborne's work good as well albeit they need to be sharpened and polished (polished is important) whereas the Douglas awls come ready to use. Hope that helps get you started __________________ Chuck Burrows Hand Crafted Leather & Frontier Knives dba Wild Rose Trading Co Durango, CO chuck@wrtcleather.com www.wrtcleather.com The beautiful sheaths created for storing the knife elevate the knife one step higher.
