Blade Stamping, Revisited
Well, thanks everybody for all the great ideas and information. I took Terry's advice and ordered a Stampmaster from Uncle Al. Great tool. If I had it to do over, I might bother making one, but I am very happy with it.
The problems started when I used it to stamp a blade. Now I claim new daughter-sleep deprivation-delirium for this bonehead move--I stamped my name upside down!!! What do you all think? Give the blade to my brother? Sell it as an "experimental" piece? What? I really feel stupid, and my daughter had nothing to do with it. Actually it was just a case of careless hurrying. Live and learn. John __________________ John Frankl |

Call it a special edition and make another just like it, stamped upside down also. Give a certificate of authenticity and state that this is the only set of this type that you will ever make and it is identified by an upside down stamp.
OR, use it as a test blade and see how well your heat treatment is working. |

Sell it. Some folks stamp with their names facing the tip, others have it facing the butt. Either way is right.
I have during one of those "moments" stamped mine on the reverse side. |

When the US mint makes a stamping error, they call it a "mint made" mistake, and that coin is worth a WHOLE lot more if found in circulation.
Just a thought, eh? When Ken Cox commitioned me to make "The Sword of Ehud",(later featured in KI-Oct'2000 issue), he asked how the stamp should be turned. Before I could give him an answer, he said to me,It has to face the tip, so when someone is impailed on the blade, they will say"Oh my God, I'v been killed by a Christian", then close their eyes and die. |
