Home brew electrolyte for etching?

Does anyone have formulas for electro-etching electrolytes that they'd like to share? I'm close to finishing a home made etcher and would like to try etching 1095. Also, any advice or tips?

Thanks!

Mike

Are you asking about stencil etchings?
....or wax etchings?

Stencils. I could try wax with ferric chloride, I suppose. But I'm close to finishing an electroetcher.

Thanks!

Re: stencils

Well, as far as homemade solutions; I've heard that a pinch of table salt in a cup of water will act as an electrolite. I have tried it just enough to see if it works...and it does. All I used at the time was a battery charger clipped to a que tip. Then I ordered a machine from Ron Claiborne, that works much better. Now I just order the etchant from Sheffield's Knifemaker Supply. A bottle is like $12. and will last virtually forever.

KOSHER SALT, IODINE FREE, THE CANNING KIND. MIX 7 TO 8 TABLESPOONS TO 1 QT. BOILED WATER. YOU MAY HAVE TO VARY THE SALT ACCORDING TO AMOUNT OF VOLTAGE USED. HOPE THIS HELPS. LET US KNOW HOW IT WORKS OUT.

Thanks, all!

Stencil material should be in soon. I'll give it a whirl and let you know.
