At Long Last - something new from my shop
Hello, all.
At long last I have something new to show from my shop. a nasty accident and injury to my right hand has kept me out of the loop - and the shop - and will continue to for some time yet, but I managed to finish this project: I's a companion knife to this very rare Spanish pin fire revolver I bought last spring. When I first saw it I knew it was SCREAMING for a companion knife and presentation case! The knife is forged from home-grown can-welded damascus (1095 / 15N20 / nickel) with a guard and scales to match and complement the 1860's gun. The pins are silver, the guard is "antiqued" with ferric chloride. The case is walnut. Thanks for looking, as always. Hope to be getting more done soon... Cheers, Chris K. WOW!
At first look I thought the cross guard looked weird, but after reading your message, and looking at the companion pin fire pistol it blew me away! Very well done, I agree, "nailed it". Very Cool!! __________________ AT "We shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow, And watch where the chalk-white arrows go To the place where the sidewalk ends." Shel Silverstein |

Thank you for your kind words. I tried to make the dagger look like a cross between a pistol and a knife, hence the guard and curved grip. The scales are attached like pistol grips with a central bolt and escutcheon. The cross-pattern and silver pins are of course to match the Spanish style gun. This one was made by Domingo Alberdi, a famous Spanish gunsmith of the 1860's. The intricate gold and silver inlay make this a very interesting and rare piece. I have seen a few guns and knife combination and I like the challenge of coming up with something which ties in with the gun's design. I will make more of these - once my hand heals. Nasty table saw accident.

Yeah power tools don't know flesh & bone exist. Hope you heal quickly Chris. Again, very nice work. Those old world gunsmiths really did some magnificent work. Egg was another famous artisan for the Kings, he also did a few automatons that were totally amazing. One had a jeweled bird come out the end of a pistol barrel and sing when the trigger was pulled.

Chris, the more I look at it the more I love it. The scales are absolutely beautiful!

My injured paw is slowing me down, but it won't stop me. I have two nice damascus hunters on the bench which need finishing, and Christmas is coming... Carl, speaking of automatrons, you should watch this video about the 18th century Swiss clock maker who built this robot! It's absolutely amazing.

Yeah, that 1700's robot is amazing! My grandson sent me that link a while back. He likes making stuff like that (much simpler scale). He built a working replica of a Darlik from "Dr. Who" that was pretty cool about 1/3 scale and fits over one of those robot vacuum cleaners. Kind of exciting if you run into at night with the lights out - lights start flashing and it starts waving it's weapon around. His mom made him disconnect the recording of course. He's only 12, but very into engineering and science.
Glad you are healing and not letting things get in the way of your work. I really like the creations you share here. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |
