Scroll on 10/22 bolt

Greetings,

here are two pics of a 10/22 bolt I engraved as a favor for a friend. he is going to do some jewelry repair work for me in return.

I did the layout on corel draw, with pre created scroll shapes. I wanted to see how small I could work in scroll tendrils.

The tendrils are similar to the winchester type scroll I do a lot of at work.

The shading is invisible. need to work on that more.

It was good practice, but there is a lot to improve upon.

Thanks for looking!

Tom

Wow, most of the scrolls would fit in Rosevelts ear! Good going! You guys and Joe Mason and inspiring me to pull out my Lindsay again and fire it up. Need to find those training wheels.

Wow Tom,
nice to see on a working mans gun.Bet you was sweatin' cuttin' that! If I could ask, what version of Corel draw do you use?
Does it have scroll templates in the program?I like that script "J" also its a nice touch. Was the bolt hard to cut, I've heard some of the Ruger's can be tough.
thanks for showing,
kent

Thanks for the kind words.

Ron, can't make it to the show after all this year. car troubles, and problems with the unsold house in NC.

Kent,

I use version 9 I used the scroll tool to create basic spirals, then converted to curves, added nodes, and altered until i liked the shape. Then i just duplicate and scale them as needed. Put a large and a small together for the floating tendril shape. i have a growing library of shapes that i can use in different design situations. i have some rudimentary leaf shapes too. Not perfect, but they give you scale and position, when you cut, just clean up the rough areas.

talk to you later,

Tom

I used acetone with a laser printout on this job. I have to play with the other solution some more. My ink jet printer sometimes leaves the black ink wet on the acetate. It is a better method when it works.

I can use damar varnish with my lexmark printer but it seems to work best with letters. Pictures don't seem to work, as they print lighter. My laser works good but can't seem to give me the detail the ink jet can, plus all the toner it leaves on the surface seems to get in the way sometimes.
