shop

What size shop did you veteran knife makers start out in? I'm thinking of getting one of those 10'x10' wooden storage buildings from Lowe's to set-up for my beginner knife making and tinkering.

My first shop was an 8x8' space at the front end of my motorhome. Had to remove the couch and the dining table. In that space I was able to have a Grizzly grinder (and later my JL grinder), my 12 speed bench top drill press, a little metal lathe, my small Sherline CNC mill, a jig saw, my Grizzly 4x7" metal saw, a shop vac, To make things fit I had to cut the buffer shaft off the Grizzly, cut the metal bench off the metal saw and build a smaller wooden table for it and hang the TV and VCR from the ceiling - where there's a will, there's a way. All these machines are still in my much larger shop today along with other larger and more 'optional' machines ....

Sounds cramped but I bet you had a lot of good times. I have a much larger barn out back but it has dirt floors and not exactly weather proof.

I had a picture but can't seem to find it this morning. My second shop was a one car garage with a dirt floor. The building leaned far, far to one side and there was only about half a roof on it. I couldn't straighten the building but I put a roof on it anyway, insulated the walls and covered them inside with OSB cut to all the weird shapes it took to fit the leaning walls and then made a floor from 1" styrofoam sheets covered with more OSB. This is where I added all the larger machines just before I came out here and built my final shop.....

I just calculated how many yards of concrete it would take to put a 4" slab in my barn and it's half the price of the buildings i'm looking at. It's roughly 11' x 28' . I think I may just concrete the barn and insulate it. It would save me some money and I would have a much larger work area. I also already have power down there for lights so that's one less expense. Can't wait for warm weather to get here so I can start on it.

ATalley has exactly what you are talking about, a 10x10 barn in the back. I give him great
credit for everything he has been able to but into this control area. He even has heat/cooling
in it for year round work. Hopefully he can take some pix to show you his setup.

For mine, I have morphed from a 8x6 area in my garage to now taking up a third of it.
I think it is 10x25. I am in the middle of closing the entire area off and splitting in half.
Part for clean/dirty. I will try to take pixs of it on my next day off to post.

I don't have any pics, and I'm just starting out now. I have a small corner of a larger woodworking shop that I'm slowly getting all of the kinks worked out of and I have to pull a 200 pound anvil out of the garage every time I want to use it in the driveway. It's frustrating not having a dedicated outdoor area but ya do what ya gotta do. I want a small pavillion. Just set up on the dirt with a small roof over everything. Toss a grill cover over the anvil and one over the forge after it cools and I can do the rest indoors.

I am in a 1 car garage that was made in the 50's and didn't have electricity until a few years ago. My shop layout is far from optimized and messier than normal but one of the only few pictures i have. I noticed a few sketchy people in the neighborhood so I snapped a pic with my phone in case a anything came up missing
