Pat,

Welcome to the forum! Please fill out your profile so we know where you are. It helps us find the best answers for your future questions.

This question really doesn't belong in this thread since it is a completely different subject, you should start a new thread. But, that isn't a total deal killer either so here's one answer:

No. That is most likely a complete non-starter, a waste of time, money, and resources. For damascus to work well, you need to know what you're using. Otherwise, you may be trying to mix metals that won't etch differently enough to show a good pattern or, even worse, steels that won't heat treat close enough together and will tear your welds apart when you quench your blade.

You don't say whether or not you have any forging experience yet. If not, you don't want to start with damascus and certainly not this way. If you do have some experience then call Kelly Cupples and order some steel to make damascus. The basic stuff is 1084, with some 15N20. Doesn't get much simpler or easier than that. Use the Search on this forum to find Kelly's phone number ...

That is part of the other reason I was hoping to have the chat logs posted, I tend to pull in links to articles and resources depending on the topic at hand.

Things like time lapse graphics to show different types of grain growth in annealed steel during hardening etc. Those are some handy dandy things to come across when you're starting.[/quote]

Hey guys, I've moved back to my farm, so I have no Internet at the moment. Just my iPhone is all I have. Java doesn't work on iPhone. I'll be trying to find some Internet service in the coming weeks. Y'all have fun and I'll see ya when I can.

Got some newbie questions..

Hi all, new to this site.

I want to start making knives completely from scratch, I have had a few practise runs already but have not heat treated any yet - they've all gone surprisingly well too.

Wondering what steels and woods people recommend for a first ever complete knife build?

Thanks in advance.

Enjoneer, it all depends on if you want to do it the hard way or easy. A lot of that comes from what you are willing to spend. Drop in on the chat session with Ray on Sunday night.

Thom,

For me, it was computers first as I made my living as a Systems Analyst for over 30 years. Now its airplanes as I make plans to get a small plane in a couple more years. BBQ, especially the TX variety, is something I know well having spent the first 40 years of my life in Houston. As for cooking knives, half of my output has been chef's knives and various specialty knives for the kitchen.

You should join us tonight in the Chat Room at 5 pm Pacific. We'll be there two or three hours, drop in any time. The simplest way is through my website at : http://www.rayrogers.com/chat/chat.htm

The fastest way to get around the learning curve short of being in the shop...

Hello from New Hampshire, been crafting knives as a hobby for awhile now using stock removal and have recently built a charcoal forge to expand my knowledge, in the process I have found I am really enjoying this new direction.

Every Sunday at 5 pm Pacific for two hours. I post a reminder in this forum on Sunday morning, you can see that thread right now as it is still near the top of the forum. Instructions for how to get in the Chat Room are posted in that thread and in every reminder ...

Please help me identify a Bird knife

Can anyone identify a handmade knife with a bird handle. It appears handmade in a foreign country but I have no clue how it came into my possession. Help! I have pictures but cannot figure out how to upload them.
