Thumbs up A very, VERY simple Newbies chat room!

We meet at 5pm Pacific (8pm Eastern) every Sunday night in our online Chat Room. We can meet any other time if you request it. Also, this room does not require my presence in order for it to be open. That means any of you can go there at any time you wish and chat with anyone who may be there. This chat room is not public so only members of KNET should be aware of it.

At the moment, there is no password required, just use your name or your KNET ID.

There is a Poll on this thread. Use it to vote for which day of the week is best for you to go online and talk knives. Choose more than one day if you want to. Whatever days(s) we choose I'll try to have the room open from about 2 pm to 7 pm Pacific (5 pm to 10 pm Eastern) so you can drop in any time in that range. We used to have a blast doing this some years ago so don't be shy, give it a try!

There are two ways to get to the Chat Room. The simplest is to go to http://www.rayrogers.com/chat/chat.htm If JAVA is running on your computer you should be able to sign in using only your name and be in the Chat Room. But, this webpage does rely on JAVA and JAVA changes their rules from time to time and the page may stop working (as recently happened). For that reason, there is a second way to get to the Chat room.

You will need a tiny Windows software program that I will email to you. I will configure it for you, all you need to do is rename the file and unzip it. Email your request for the software to me at knives@rayrogers.com and be sure to include your full name in the request.

If you are using something other than a PC, or even on a PC if you wish, you can Google for software that allows you to access IRC. Free programs are available for PC, MAC, iOS, Android. If you are fairly computer savvy you can configure these programs to connect to server irc.ircstorm.net and then go into the chat room on channel #KNET If you can do that you will be in the same place we always hang out. This type of program, called IRC chat, is available for any type of computer - PC, Mac, tablet, or phone.

PLEASE DO NOT WAIT UNTIL SUNDAY NIGHT TO REQUEST THIS SOFTWARE! I'm busy Sunday nights - I'm talking about knives in the Chat Room!!

If you need help then call out....

I voted. Let's get back to chatting like we used to! I have really missed it. Time really flies, I can't believe how long it's been.

I have been holding off on getting a mic set-up, wondering if the chat thing was still alive. My schedule changes every week, so I can't say what night will always be good/bad for me. A bad one this week might be good next. Post up whatever you decide and I'll be there when I can.

This sounds like a good reason to buy a mic!

This sounds like a great idea. We can share information a lot faster this way. I'm available any night during the week. The kids go to bed around 7 E.T so 5-10pm is a perfect time for me.

I'm not voting because my schedule/net connection is erratic to the extreme but I'm open to stopping in any time you guys choose, and if I'm available.

Next you can set up a bear cam

Good, sounds like we have at least a little interest in trying this. Please go ahead and vote - if you're schedule is erratic then vote for whatever day you think you would be most likely to want to attend if you could.

Microphones are cheap. I just checked eBay and there are plenty of mics you can get for under $5 and that includes free shipping!! Not having a mic is not an excuse....

Alright I voted. I'll start looking for a mic set up. I got a house full of women folk that'll be gripeing about the speakers. They gripe about the usual "bing" from a normal chat room everytime someone responds, so a headphone set is my ticket. Still can be had for pretty cheap.

Headphones can be cheap but, if necessary, you could even use earbuds. You may already have a set on your kid's iPod ....

This sound like it would be a good way to get a lot of info at one time as well as meet people and have fun. I don't know a lot about computers, I do have a mic somewhere this new lap top might have a built in mic. Question, this is audio only? You won't need that little eye thing?
Best for me is during the week. Weekends are OK but sometimes family stuff happening. Once you establish a time I can also move my schedule around. If we have problems is there a particular tech guy on here that you can recommend asking for help?

It isn't audio only, you can simply type whatever you want to say. Of course, if you don't have speakers you'll only know whatever anyone decides to type. In the past, what actually happens is that there are usually several conversations going on at once. A few people are talking while everyone else types their comments which are sometimes on the subject being talked about and sometimes on completely different subjects.

Based on the poll, I will first open up the chat room on Fri, Sat and Sunday this next weekend. The poll says that Sunday is by far the most preferred day but the other two days follow close behind. I will personally set it up each day and see what the turn out looks like. Subsequent weeks I may only do it on Sunday, depending on the turn out. I will also be happy to do it on any week day if you ask even if only one or two people are interested at that time.

There really isn't much that you should need a techie for, but if you do, I'm about as much a computer tech s most. The software is already on my website, nothing for you to do there except register by choosing a name and password. Since you are the only one who can actually see your computer you'll just have to look at it and find the place to plug in a mic if one isn't built in. A laptop would probably have a built in mic, towers and desk tops probably wouldn't. Any computer sold in the last 20 years has a built in speaker so that shouldn't be an issue.

Video cameras are supported but not required. Frankly, I doubt we could use them because they take a lot of band width. But, if anyone wants to turn on a camera for a minute just to show a knife or let us see what they look like that should be possible...

Everybody knows that visiting another knife maker's shop is the fastest way to shorten your learning curve. Dropping into this chat room will be like visiting several other knife makers all at one time without ever having to leave the comfort of your Barca Lounger.

So, this next Fri, Sat and Sunday (Oct 26,27,28) I will have the chat room open from 2 pm to 7 pm Pacific (5 pm to 10 pm Eastern) whether anybody shows up or not. If nobody shows then I'll just cry myself to sleep and you'll have that on your conscience but you will also be missing out on a great free opportunity to meet and chat with other knife makers of all skill levels. If attendance is good then I'm willing to do this every week or whatever interval we can agree on.

Go back to the first post in this thread for instructions on how to get to the chat room. I've done this a lot and I promise you that this is as easy as it has ever been so be there or be square .....

Reminder: I'll have the chat room open tonight, Fri Oct 26, 2012, and also tomorrow night, and Sunday night during the hours mentioned in the first post on this thread. That should make it possible for nearly everybody who is interested to come drop in at least one of those days....
