Dyed Stabilized maple
I've been dyeing some of the maple before I stabilize it and just thought I would get your thoughts on it. The first time I dyed the wood I put it in a vessel with the dye and pulled vaccuum for 3 days then hit it with pressure for 3 days. I then took it out and let it dry for 7 days in my smoker set at 50 deg, then cut it down the middle. It did go right thru to the middle but maybe not as much as possible. The next batch I held vaccuum and pressure for 7 days each. It seemed to be a little more penetration, but it could be just the wood. I now have a batch that will be vaccuum and pressure for 14 days each. I will post pics once it is done.

Not sure if I'm looking at the 3 by 3 days or 7 by 7 days, but either way, it doesn't look like you'd need the 14 day process. The few lighter spots don't seem to be around the center, but may be density differences in the figured grain. If nothing else, it'll tie up your equipment for near a whole month.
I like that reddish mahogany look, bet just a touch of that would look great on marbled or feather figured walnut. You didn't mention what you use in the smoker. I'd give mesquite a slight edge over hickory chips. Take care, Craig |

Thats called "ART"
Yeah, I had a few wrecks with this red dye. I think Dennis got me going with this dyeing wood for a reason!! Not to mention the chemical from stabilizing on walls as well. I seem to not make a mess dealing with vacuum but when I'm working with pressure it seems to want to make art on my walls and floor. Go figure!!!

full penetration
I just went out to the shop and ground the biggest block I had right past the center and I am getting full penetration through the middle. I sanded it down to 1000 grit and put 1 coat of boiled linseed oil on it. Looks really good.

Pertty stuff!
Sorry I have not had the time to box up and ship my koa to you, Jim. It may have to wait till after Blade.
When do you find time to sleep, pal? Hydraulic presses, wood stabilizing, hammer-in prep, and, oh,your regular job!? Dana |
