Noobie dumb question

I just found out Tractor supply co. sells steel bar stock and I bought a 3/16" x 1 1/2" x 48" pc of hr steel. Could anyone tell me if this would be alright to make knives out of, it didnt have an identification number on it (what type 1084). Thx in advance. It was $5.69 for the piece.

No one but the manufacturer can tell you for sure but the odds are against it. You could cut off a piece and heat treat it to see if it hardens like a blade steel should. If it does then it should make a knife. There have been many discussions on testing and heat treating salvaged steels in previous threads, the Search button should find them.

That same $5.69 would have bought a piece of 1084 or 1095 or another blade steel from any knife supply house. Then, you would know exactly what you had and how to heat treat it. Something to think about in the future....

Thx for the advice, still have to find a way to heat treat, been debating on a homemade forge out of a old charcoal grill, with fire bricks.

The "weldable bar stock" you find in hardware stores and such will almost always be 1018 mild steel. Use it for practice grinding/forging, or use it to make the legs on a forge...but don't use it for an actual blade.

Like Ray said, good high carbon steel is not expensive. There are lots of knife supply houses around as well as a few guys on-line here who sell blade steels. Any 10XX high carbon steel like 1095 or 1070 is nice. 5160 is another good choice.

Homemade forges are the best! ...or at least the most fun!

Here's a few of mine:

I built two more propane ones last weekend...one for me and one for a friend. They're pretty easy to put together. If you have any questions, feel free to shoot me an email.

Right, mild steel makes good practice material. So does ordinary wood lathe, and it's much cheaper...
