San Mai Fighter

Well, I guess it is San Mai or just low layer damascus. The blade is 6 layers of 1095 and 15N20. Not layered alternately but instead two pieces of 1095 on either side of two pieces of 15N20 as to sandwich the 15N20 in the middle. The blade is about 7.5 inches long at just under 3/16 thick and overall length of about 12 inches. Single twist damascus gaurd, African Blackwood spacer/ferrul and Beng Burl handle. I ran into some inclusions in the burl when finishing, but I guess they add character.

She is differentially heat treated so the blade has alot going on in it for being a very simple pattern weld. It has the san mai look plus some extra layers and a temper line.

Let me know what you think, TIA

Thanks all, I appreciate the compliments.

BrB- I hand sand up to 600 grit before etching and the hit her with the some worn 600 grit to clean up after etch.

Thanks again-

Sean

Sean,

Let me tell you a little secret.... next time, bring it up to 600 or 800 grits and give it a heavier etch.. then use some 1200 or 2000 grits with lots of oil just to get the major oxide off.. it will do beauty on the contrast lines of a laminated blade or thinner layered damascus. Try it once and let's see how you like it.
